(February 9, 2016) – A mother took her newborn baby to the University Medical Center in Tennessee for what she thought would be a routine physical. But WTVF reports the hospital mistakenly performed a surgical procedure on her child that was meant for another child.
The mother, Jennifer Melton, says the nurse returned with her baby and mentioned the surgery they did without parental consent. The family's attorney says the doctor cut a flap of skin from under the child's tongue.
And now they’re concerned the baby could have speech or eating problems.
“It's recklessness. There's no excuse for cutting on a healthy child. There's no excuse for mixing up babies at a hospital,” said Clint Kelly, Melton’s attorney.
In a report, the doctor responsible for performing the surgery admitted to the mistake and apologized.
