ZIONSVILLE, Ind. (Feb. 17, 2016 )-- Friends, family and community members are mourning after police say a mother and son were shot and killed in their own home.
Katherine Giehll, 31, and her 4-year-old son Raymond were found dead Wednesday morning. When officers arrived to the home in the 6800 block of Old Hunt Club Road they found Katherine dead near the front door and Raymond dead in the living room.
It’s believed the little boy was shot while he was watching TV.
Wednesday was Katherine’s 31st birthday. Katherine and Raymond were spending the morning at home before heading to school.
“Raymond was scheduled for some speech therapy and didn’t show up. We had called dad to see when mom and Raymond would be there and he said at that time there had been a tragedy and that they wouldn’t be coming to school again,” said Ron Evans, head of Traders Point Christian Academy.
School officials say Raymond Giehll IV, would tell teachers and school friends to call him "Four."
“He’s just one of those students that just lit up every time he came in the room,” said Evans.
Investigators spent hours on the Zionsville street, as news of the tragic news started to spread through the neighborhood.
“I’ve been sick to my stomach since I even heard this was going on. The whole thing is just heart wrenching and just so scary. You just don’t think this is something that is going to happen near your home,” said a neighbor.
“He was an internal part of that classroom and really enjoyed being there. He was learning tremendously. He was coming along really well,” said Evans.
School officials say Katherine would help out at the school when she could.
“She was a volunteering on regular basis and the moms in that community would regularly communicate and it’s hitting them very difficult time for them,” said Evans.
A letter was sent out to parents informing them about the tragedy. Counselors will be at the school on Thursday for parents and students.
“It’s hard to believe that something like this would really happen to such a precious family,” said Evans.
Police believe the gunman was Katherine’s uncle, 61-year-old Lucius Hamilton III. Officers found Hamilton dead at the Hilton in downtown Indianapolis from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
