INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 18, 2016)-- Family and friends of 31-year-old Katie Giehll and 4-year-old Raymond Giehll continue to grieve the loss of the mother and son who are described as full of life and love. Katie and Raymond were shot and killed by Giehll’s uncle Wednesday morning inside of their Zionsville home.

“I feel so sad for everybody. Especially the kids involved. They are really not understanding what is going on. It is really hard on everybody,” says a close family friend of the Giehll family.

Investigators believe 61-year-old Lucius Hamilton showed up at the home in the 6800 block of Old Hunt Club Road before 8 a.m. armed with a gun. Katie’s husband and Raymond’s father became concerned about them after receiving a text message. He ran home to check on both Katie and Raymond, only to find them dead inside.

“I could not even imagine having to go through something like this,” says the friend.

Wednesday was Katie Giehll’s 31st birthday. Friends saw the horrific news on television and got a text message from Katie’s sister in law confirming the tragedy.

The search for Hamilton escalated throughout the day and spread throughout four different counties. Police say the surveillance video that was taken from the home in Zionsville showed Hamilton’s car leaving the scene. Officials took Hamilton’s wife into protective custody and stationed military style vehicles outside of his Carmel home. By late Wednesday afternoon, as police were closing in, Hamilton shot and killed himself at a downtown Hilton hotel. While the man hunt was underway, the family was at the home trying to make sense of the horrific situation.

“They just want time to grieve. They are still in shock. They are still like everyone else…not understanding why,” says the friend.
