COLUMBUS, Ind. (Feb. 23, 2016)— A K-9 officer with the Columbus Police Department worked his last shift Tuesday morning.

After eight years of service, Rex retired and celebrated by eating a large steak courtesy of Texas Roadhouse.

Rex will continue to live with his handler Officer Lehman, who the K-9 has been working with since the summer of 2008.

Over the course of his service, Rex made nearly 250 apprehensions and tracked hundreds of suspects. Last year, Rex assisted authorities in recovering seven pounds of methamphetamine.

The Columbus Police Department is in the process of selecting a new canine.
