INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 23, 2016)– The Every Dog Counts Rescue in Indianapolis said on their Facebook page Tuesday they were dealing with “the tiniest victim of abuse (they’ve) ever had.”

The bully-breed puppy was rushed to the emergency veterinarian in critical condition with suspected head trauma.

“How does someone hurt a little one so tiny & fragile?” The rescue wrote. “We will never understand.”

The puppy has since been named Niko, after another white bully-breed dog who suffered and survived abuse.

“We’re hoping our little buddy can channel his namesake’s courage and resilience, and we hope he can feel all the love everyone is sending his way.” The rescue wrote. “Their name, after all, means ‘victory of the people.'”

The rescue said they weren’t sure if Niko would survive when he arrived there this morning, but he’s hanging in there. He’s now trying to stand up and vocalize some. They do not belive he can see or hear– that may or may not get better with time.
