INDIANAPOLIS (March 3, 2016) – A family is displaced after an early morning fire destroyed their northwest side home Thursday.

Fire crews responded to the fire in the 4500 block of Wixshire Court, near 46th St. and High School Road, just before 4 a.m.

When they arrived on scene, firefighters say they found the family waiting for them outside the burning home. The family told firefighters that they woke up to their cat meowing and discovered the fire.

Fire crews say there were no working smoke detectors in the home. The house is a total loss, with damage estimated at $85,000.

Firefighters believe the fire started in the front porch, and are unsure of the cause at this point. The family has lived at the home for 28 years and will stay with relatives.

Crews say two Pike Township firefighters suffered minor burns.
