9 firefighters taken to hospital after explosion rocks Seattle neighborhood

SEATTLE, Wash. (March 9, 2016) – An explosion in a Seattle neighborhood injured several firefighters and destroyed two buildings early Wednesday morning.

According to our sister station, KCPQ, the explosion happened around 1:40 a.m. PST at 85th Avenue North and Greenwood Avenue North. A station photographer was checking out a report of a possible gas leak when the explosion went off.

The photographer described the scene as a “war zone” and said glass was raining down. The photographer was not hurt, the TV station reported.

Firefighters were on the scene when it happened, and the Seattle Fire Department said nine firefighters were taken to the hospital. The area was being evacuated.
