Update (April 13, 2016) -- Muncie police say all four suspects wanted in connection for the murder of Rafael Rodriguez are in custody.
MUNCIE, Ind. (April 11, 2016) – Muncie police have made two arrests in the city’s first murder of the year.
Police arrested Logan May, 21, on charges of murder and conspiracy to commit robbery resulting in death. Cody Buck, 20, was arrested on charges of murder and robbery.
Rafael Rodriguez, 24, was killed and two other men were wounded inside a unit at Canterbury Townhomes early Sunday morning on the city's west side.
While police say they are still searching for a motive, neighbors tell FOX59 news Rodriguez and May were dating. Court records show May was upset about a drug deal. She admitted to police she was at Rodriguez's home to "collect methamphetamine she was owed because Rafael had just gotten some."
Court records show May told police she drove three suspects to Rodriguez's house so she could rob him. She told police the suspects were "only supposed to rob him." Court records state May never called police to report what happened.
Muncie Police Chief Steve Stewart said detectives are currently looking for three juvenile suspects. They are considered armed and dangerous.
“We’ve worked this since 1:30-2:00 early Sunday morning and we haven’t stopped. It’s a very important case. We want to get this solved. We want to get the shooters off the street," Stewart said.
Stewart said it's very concerning that teens are involved in a murder -- a crime that's very rare in Muncie.
“I wish I had the magic wand for that problem," Stewart said. He added, “There are a lot of young people that seem to gravitate toward that kind of violence to solve a conflict.”
Rodriguez was set to go on trial for previous methamphetamine charges that stemmed from a 2015 arrest. Stewart said it's common to see other crimes committed when drugs are involved, but a crime to the extent of murder is rare.
"Anytime that people are criminals and dealing with other criminals things can go bad rather quickly," Stewart said.
A 28-year-old man was treated by paramedics and released while a 21-year-old is listed in stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit of IU Ball Memorial Hospital.
Police are still investigating the murder and anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers of Delaware County at 765-286 4050.
