INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (April 14, 2016) - Operation Safe Surrender is a program designed to help some felons with active warrants deal with the charges in a safe place.

It’s a community effort involving religious leaders and local law enforcement, including the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office and Sheriff’s Department.

The program is for warrants issued in Marion County only.

Those with non-violent misdemeanor and level 6 felony warrants can have those addressed in a safe, respectful way.

For example, if an offender has a speeding ticket, low level drug offense charge or child support issue and missed a court date resulting in a warrant, this program could help.

“The reality is, law enforcement, at some point, they’re going to come get you,” said Reverend Stephen J. Clay, Senior Pastor at Messiah Baptist Church. “If you don’t come in and avail yourself to this opportunity, at some point the clock is going to run out.”

However, high level felons, like those facing murder, robbery or sex crimes charges, do not qualify.

For those who do qualify, one of a few outcomes could happen: open warrants could be rescinded, resolved or reset to later dates with no fear of arrest.

“This is not a wholesale, arrest everybody kind of program, it’s not a sting,” said Reverend Clay. “This is why the church is integral to this process because the church brings the credibility and the integrity, and the house of worship is a safe place.”

Lawyers will also attend to give free legal advice; WorkOne will be on site to offer job placement help.
