Coroner identifies 2-year-old boy who fatally shot himself after taking gun from mother’s purse

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (April 22, 2016)– The Marion County Coroner’s office identified a 2-year-old boy who fatally shot himself Wednesday night.

Police say Kyian Shelton, 2, retrieved a gun from his mother’s purse while she stepped away. The purse had been sitting on the kitchen counter.

When officers arrived on scene, they say they found the unresponsive 2-year-old boy suffering from a single gunshot wound to the chest. According to police, the child’s mother was the only other person in the house at the time of the shooting.

Shelton’s cause of death was officially ruled a gunshot wound to the chest. The manner of his death was ruled an accident.
