A 13-year-old boy may have been the world’s biggest Deadpool fan, and actor Ryan Reynolds wrote a stirring tribute to the boy, who lost his battle against cancer.

Reynolds met Connor McGrath through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He said the 13-year-old was “unqualified funny” and had that “thing” that great performers and comedy writers had. Connor loved the comic book character Deadpool.

His wish was to see Reynolds’ “Deadpool” movie, an R-rated comic book movie based on the character. The young cancer patient got his wish, and was the first person to see the movie, which would go on to make $760 million at the global box office.

It wasn’t the final cut of the film; some of the effects weren’t finished and some of the jokes didn’t work. Still, it was something Connor and Reynolds would never forget. Reynolds called Connor, “Bubba,” and Connor called him, “Bubba2.”

They exchanged countless text messages (“pages and pages of hilarious texts,” Reynold wrote). When Reynolds visited Connor six weeks later, he realized things weren’t going well.

“After my visit, I didn’t know if I was saying goodbye or see ya later. Sitting here now, I realize it was both,” Reynolds wrote in his Facebook tribute.

“In a certain sense he WAS Deadpool. Or, at least everything Deadpool aspires to be; balancing pain, fearlessness, love and a filthy (filthy!) sense of humor in one body. I wish he could’ve stuck around a lot longer,” Reynold wrote.

He thanked Connor’s family and Make-A-Wish for bringing the two of them together. And he also made a final promise to his friend.

“See ya down the road, Bubba.”
