INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – If you think all of the best rooms around Indianapolis are booked during the month of May, think again.
There is a multi-million dollar Carmel mansion listed on Airbnb.com that is available for rent during race season. The property is owned by the inventor of voice mail: Scott Jones. It has a movie theater, basketball court and more rooms than we could count.
“I wanted to open it up to the community and the nation, I love the comments that I’m getting from people out of state or out of the country. They tell me they had no idea Indiana had something like this,” said Jones.
The 26,000 square foot mansion, called Elysian Fields, has been featured on MTV Cribs twice.
“This is a special asset to be shared,” said Jones.
The mansion was listed just in time for race season; visitors can rent the entire home for $5,000 a night during race weekend.
“When I first listed it, I thought I would immediately get Indy 500 bookings but it did not happen for three weeks. Then, all of a sudden on May 1…I got five or six requests in the same day,” said Jones.
Visit Indy is not surprised that locals are listing their homes online because 300,000 are expected to visit for the 100th running.
“Hotel rooms are virtually sold out throughout the metropolitan area. All 33,000 of our rooms are gone,” said Chris Gahl of Visit Indy.
Many of those people have had to book places as far out as Muncie, but there are cheap options around the city too. There are apartments for rent downtown Indianapolis for $25.00 a night or there are entire homes for rent in Speedway for a few hundred dollars.
“We are happy that our visitors are not only finding their way into hotels around the state, but also through Airbnb channels,” said Gahl.
