Robbery arrest leads to synthetic drug bust
LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Lafayette police arrested two people after a robbery led them to discover an alleged synthetic drug dealing operation Wednesday.
Police were called to Brady Lane near Pheasant Run Apartments around 9:30 a.m. to investigate a report of armed robbery. There, officers found a man with facial injuries from an altercation.
The man told officers that he had been struck with a baseball bat and property had been stolen from his pockets. He told officers that he knew the attackers and they were in the Claystone Apartments.
Police investigated and subsequently arrested Sharmeka Gray, 29, for robbery with a deadly weapon and battery with a deadly weapon.
During the investigation, police determined that the robbery had occurred at a home in the 3000 block of Yorktown Court. Police say they conducted a search and found items related to the distribution of drugs.
Police say they collected 23 pounds of a synthetic drug called spice, 44 pounds of raw material used to make the drug, a small-caliber handgun, paraphernalia and around $6,200 in cash.
Lawrence Darnell Lucas, 31, was arrested as a result. He has been charged with possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, dealing in a synthetic drug, maintaining a common nuisance and possession of a synthetic drug.
Both subjects were transported to the Tippecanoe County Jail.
