Schmidt Peterson Motorsports unveils innovative garage ahead of Grand Prix
INDIANAPOLIS (May 12, 2016) – Before the cars took the track for practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway ahead of the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indy, attention turned to the Schmidt Peterson Motorsports garage. Team owner Sam Schmidt unveiled a new, fan-friendly layout for drivers James Hinchcliffe, Mikhail Aleshin and Oriol Servia.
Instead of the back of the cars facing out to the fans, spectators in the garages throughout the month of May will be able to see the entire side of the car with the innovative, gallery-style layout.
Additionally, SPM revealed Aleshin’s #7 ride, which recently partnered with videogame DOOM ahead of the Grand Prix.
“It’s only practice, but at the same, it’s going to be very important to find a good setup for the weekend and for the qualifying,” Aleshin said. “But when I was here last time, two years ago, we’ve been pretty good, we’ve been pretty competitive. I hope for the best, I think we have a good car.”
Also making it’s debut Thursday at the SPM garages was Servia’s #77 car, bearing the traditional Lucas Oil theme.
Attention quickly turned to the track, with drivers focused on Saturday’s Grand Prix. But with the excitement of May in Indianapolis building, the lure of the Indy 500 continues to build.
“As soon as the calendar switches from April to May 1, everybody starts thinking the 500,” Hinchcliffe said. “We get to this week and think, ‘Oh no, there’s another race we have to worry about for a few days here,’ kind of disconnecting from the 500 and getting into GP mode, it’s still an important race, still has the all points and prize money as everywhere else.”
“It is a bit of a challenge, for sure, because you’re sitting here looking at everything that screams the 500 but you really have to focus on the GP,” Hinchcliffe added. “We’ve had a couple years practice now so hopefully keep focused on that and switch gears for the 500 on Monday.”
Gates open at 8 am for Friday’s qualifications day at IMS. The full schedule of the day’s events is available here. The Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis is set to begin Saturday at 3:50 p.m.
