Mug shot of Sharlee Forston

PERU, Ind. – A Peru woman was sentenced on Thursday after her 3-year-old daughter nearly shot her neighbor.

Indiana State Police say they were dispatched to the 36000 block of Beale Court on October 7 after a woman called to report that someone fired a bullet through the wall of her home.

According to court documents, the woman told police she heard a loud bang and was struck in the face and chest with drywall.

Following an investigation, police determined that a 3-year-old girl in the apartment next to hers fired a gun. Police say the gun was left fully-loaded on her parents’ nightstand.

The girls’ parents, Sharlee Forston and Johnathan Jones, were charged with neglect of a dependent.

Forston pleaded guilty to neglect and was sentenced to one year in DOC, all suspended to probation.  She also pleaded to possession of marijuana and was sentenced to 180 days, also suspended to probation.

Indiana State Police want to remind all gun owners to keep weapons out of a child’s reach.
