CARMEL, Ind. – Carmel fire crews responded to an apartment fire early Wednesday morning.

Crews were dispatched just before 6 a.m. to “Old Town on the Monon” apartments in the 100 block of West Main Street. Firefighters saw flames shooting from the roof when they arrived.

The building was evacuated as Carmel firefighters doused the flames. At least two ladder trucks were used.

Crews opened a third-floor ceiling to check for the source of the fire. Their investigation is focused on an air conditioning unit.

Firefighters had the fire under control just after 6 a.m. They were looking for any hot spots. Drivers should avoid the area if possible because trucks will remain on the scene for cleanup.
