CARMEL,Ind. - A new study found that the number of Hoosiers wanting to buy a home in a "walkable" area is on the rise.
According to a new study by real estate expert Christopher Leinberger, there are seven “walkable urban neighborhoods in the Indy metro area:
- Downtown Indy
- Fountain Square
- Broad Ripple
- Meridian Kessler
- Carmel Arts District
- Downtown Fishers
Leinberger’s study looked at the 30 largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. and ranked them based off their walkability.
Most of the walkable areas identified as part of this study are in and around downtown Indianapolis, but two areas in Hamilton County also met the requirements.
One local real estate agent says home in these areas are in high demand right now.
“It used to be, people would just talk about oh I want to buy a house that has four bedrooms, or three bedrooms in a nice neighborhood and it ended there. Now, people are saying I want to be in a house that’s a nice house but I want to be somewhere that’s walkable,” said Laura Musall, a realtor with FC Tucker.
One urban planning expert says that real estate developers in the Indy area have a choice to make right now.
Will they continue with the suburban sprawl development model, or begin building homes and apartments in more walkable areas?
