UPDATE: The two inmates that escaped the Fayette County Jail were apprehended in Dayton, Ohio Tuesday, June 21.

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ind. – Authorities made a possible break in the search for two inmates who escaped from the Fayette County Jail.

A stolen truck believed to be connected to the case was located in Dayton, Ohio. The truck was undamaged and the keys were still inside, according to the Fayette County Sheriff's Department. Investigators believe Chadwick R. Heath and Michael D. Roberts stole the truck from an acquaintance that Roberts used to work for. The 2015 White Ford F350 was reported stolen Sunday morning.

Jail staff noticed Heath and Roberts were missing around 1:30 a.m. Saturday when performing a routine head count before locking them into their cells for the night. Officers checked the inmates' cell and noticed a 2X2 hole in both the interior and exterior walls, and then notified Sheriff Joey Laughlin.

"They were able to remove the inside cement blocks" says Sheriff Laughlin. "They then were able to take a piece of metal that they had taken from a box inside the block and break the outside brick out. And they’re in a block that’s at the rear of the jail and it would’ve been very hard to hear that pounding from anywhere else in the facility."

Authorities checked the camera system and observed Heath and Roberts escaping through the hole around 11:30 p.m.

Officers and K-9 units were dispatched to the scene to try and find the inmates, but were unsuccessful. At last check Sunday afternoon, the sheriff and his staff were still searching.

"We’re taking all the tips and information that come in and following up on those," says Sheriff Laughlin. "I’ve had a few agencies reach out and I’m in contact with the US Marshals right now, who have been a great help."

Laughlin's jail staff has worked since the escape to keep other inmates from being able to do the same.

"I can’t really speak to what the structure malfunction is at this time because I think it’s a security issue that we’re going to have to deal with and until we do, I don’t really want to release that information," says Sheriff Laughlin. "But there should be something in place there for that brick that was not in place when that building was constructed."

Heath is currently charged with four counts of dealing in a narcotic drug, maintaining a common nuisance and visiting a common nuisance. Roberts is currently charged with burglary and two counts of theft.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Department is offering a cash reward of $1,000 for any information that would lead to the apprehension of the escaped inmates. Anyone with any information or tips can call the department at 765-825-1110 Ext 602, Fayette County Dispatch at 825-2111, via Instant Message on the jail’s Facebook page or call 911.
