HAVANA, IL – An invasion of mayflies on an Illinois bridge caused serious traffic problems for drivers Sunday night.

According to the Havana Police Department, the thousands of mayflies caused the roads to be very slick and visibility was very poor, causing numerous accidents.

“At one point they had piled 6 inches high and when ran over, became very slick,” said the Havana Police Department.

Last year, the same thing happened to the bridge that connects Savanna, Illinois, with Sabula, Iowa, and the mayflies were so bad, the department of transportation closed the bridge.
