Police: Man offered to help lost woman, raped her behind dumpster
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Indianapolis Metropolitan police are trying to identify a rape suspect.
According to IMPD, the victim boarded an IndyGo bus around 10:30 p.m. on March 17 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse and then fell asleep. A man got on the bus a few minutes later at Ohio Street and Meridian Street. When the vehicle ended its route at 30th Street and Mitthoeffer Road, the victim didn’t know where she was.
She said the man offered to let her use his phone. Then, according to police, he raped her behind a dumpster at Bavarian Village apartments and took her to an empty apartment. When she woke up in the morning, she went to the apartment office and called police.
“This is a guy with complete disregard for the rules of society and what’s worse is he played the card of I’ll help you,” said Sgt. Steve DuBois with Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana.
Some of the victim’s personal belongings were missing, including her debit card, which was used three times at a Citgo gas station located at 2935 N. Mitthoeffer Rd. on March 18, 2016.
“When people do things like this, people are shy to accept help because they’re worried are they going to hurt me or are they really trying to help me,” said DuBois.
Dubois says someone pretending to be a good Samaritan undercuts the public’s trust in each other. He hopes someone sees the surveillance pictures and steps forward to help catch the accused rapist.
“Here this guy is saying he would help her and he ends up assaulting the woman. It just makes society harder to help each other when there’s people out there doing things like that,” said DuBois.
