Marine veterans playing Pokemon Go help police catch attempted murder suspect
FULLERTON, Calif. – A pair of Marine Corps veterans hoping to “catch ‘em all” in Pokemon Go caught up with an attempted murder suspect instead.
Javier Soch and Seth Ortega were using the app in downtown Fullerton in California’s Orange County when they helped police find a man who was reportedly bothering children at a nearby playground, reports KTLA.
Police learned the man—later identified as Jacob Kells—was wanted in Sonoma in connection with an attempted murder case.
Soch said his game froze; when he looked up, he saw that Kells appeared to be scaring a woman and three children. He and Ortega followed Kells around and contacted police after seeing Kells touch a boy’s leg at a park.
“It’s not what we were expecting our day to turn out with,” said Ortega. “The game, when it loads up on the screen, says to be cautious of your surroundings. Strongly follow that advice.”
