SAN DIEGO, Calif. – A San Diego police officer died and another was wounded late Thursday after being shot.

San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said the two officers were making a stop shortly before 11 p.m. The officers, both members of the department’s gang unit, called for assistance almost immediately after making the stop, reports KSWB.

Other officers arrived in the area to find both had been shot. One suffered multiple wounds to his upper body and was rushed to a hospital where he later died. The other officer had surgery and is expected to survive, Zimmerman said.

Police swarmed the area and said a suspect was in custody. The man was found in a ravine and had been shot; he was taken to a hospital for treatment of his wounds. Police were continuing to search the area for other possible suspects, Zimmerman said.

The names of the officers won’t be released until their families have been notified.
