Police: Escaped Indiana inmate stabbed himself repeatedly in throat after encountering police
ORANGE COUNTY, Ind. – An escaped inmate stabbed himself in the throat repeatedly after encountering police who were looking for him in Paoli.
According to Indiana State Police, Denny Kellems, Jr., 33, escaped from the Orange County Jail between 10 p.m. Tuesday and 2 a.m. Wednesday. He confronted a woman in Paoli, battered her and then stole her vehicle, police said.
Paoli police found the stolen vehicle in French Lick Wednesday morning and asked Indiana State Police for a K9 to help. As officers looked for Kellems, Paoli Officer Brandon Mesarosh saw him near Edgewood Apartments. When Kellems saw the officer, he approached him and then began stabbing himself in the throat several times, police said.
Senior Trooper Robbie Lambert, another officer involved in the search, had medical supplies and provided Kellems with emergency aid until medical personnel arrived.
Kellems went to IU Health in Paoli for further treatment. State police said charges against him are pending.
