INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – When 8-year-old Markeith Drane III noticed a girl in his class was being teased because of her torn back pack three years ago, it broke his heart, but it also sparked an idea.

Thanks to that moment, Markeith is now making a huge difference in the lives of many of his peers and their families.

Markeith started a book drive to make sure every student has a new backpack stuffed with new school supplies.

The first year, Markeith gave away around 25 backpacks, the second year he gave away 50 backpacks. This year he has a corporate sponsor who put up donation signs. His goal was 200 backpacks and he exceeded that with over 300.

Inside each backpack was a positive message from Markeith telling each student they are special.

Community Health Network and FOX59 are happy to honor Markeith as the July Community Hero for his commitment to his peers and making sure more students have what they need for a successful start to the new school year.
