CHESTER, SC – A woman was arrested on accusations that she killed her infant son by putting him in the refrigerator, WSOC reports.
Angela Renee Blackwell, 27, has been charged with homicide by child abuse following a six-month investigation.
Police say she put her 4-day-old son, William, in a refrigerator at her home on February 27. She removed William from the refrigerator three hours later and called 911.
When emergency personnel arrived, they detected a faint heartbeat. But unfortunately, they were not able to raise his body temperature quickly enough to save him. He died of hypothermia.
The child’s father, Jeff Lewis, told WSOC he doesn’t believe Blackwell killed their son.
“She’s innocent. She’s a good mother,” Blackwell said.
Lewis says there were many people in their house the night their baby died, and he believes a child with autism who was in the house put the baby in the refrigerator. WSOC asked Blackwell’s public defender about the claim, but he said he didn’t have any information about that.
Blackwell faces a sentence of 20 years to life in prison if she is convicted.
