INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Multiple shooting investigations are underway following a violent Labor Day weekend.

IMPD detectives say there were four separate shooting incidents during Saturday and Sunday. Two people were shot and killed; three victims were taken to the hospital.

A man who was killed on the near north side has been identified as Jakoby Hughes, 22.

Officers say they’re investigating all four incidents, including a violent fight that broke out early Sunday morning on the east side where they say six people were shooting at each other.

“A lot of times they might think, ‘We’ll just go ahead and take care of this on the street,’ which we do not want to have happen. It just becomes one of those tit for tat types of situations,” said IMPD Officer James Gillespie.

Gillespie says officers are asking more witnesses to come forward.

“This is a problem we’ve had for quite some time. For whatever reason, folks are not willing to come forward with vital information that we need to move forward with an investigation or move forward with prosecution,” he said.

So far this year, FOX59 records show there’s been more than 100 fatal shootings. Last year, the number got up to 151 total when the year ended. Officials say here’s been a steady increase in the number of fatal shootings every year since 2012.
