Bridge work to resume after bat restrictions are lifted
KNOX COUNTY, Ind. – Better late than never, or at least that is what the Indiana Department of Transportation is saying.
Lincoln Memorial Bridge that connects Vincennes to Westport, Illinois was supposed to have been repaired six months ago, but repair work is just now getting started.
Most construction delays are weather related; however, contractors were faced with a different problem with this rehab project – bats.
Work was originally scheduled to start in March but crews discovered the bridge was a roosting site for the endangered Indiana Brown Bat.
Federal regulations restrict work that could potentially disturb the habitat of the Indiana bat between April 1 and October 1. So during that time contractors were only able to perform light activities of painting and cleaning.
The bridge closure is expected to last 180 calendar days, dependent on weather conditions. During that time, motorists should use the official detours of Illinois 33, U.S. 50 and U.S. 41 in Indiana. The closure will be in place around the clock until the completion of the $3.2 million dollar project.
