BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A student at Indiana University Bloomington was arrested Tuesday night after police found marijuana and a stolen handgun in a vehicle outside of a dorm.
Officers on foot patrol noticed the smell of marijuana coming from the parked vehicle near Forest Quad around 11 p.m.
When officers conducted a search, they recovered 34 grams of marijuana and a loaded handgun that had been reported stolen in 2014.
Police say the gun, a 9mm Smith & Wesson, was one of several firearms stolen during a robbery of a gun store in North Vernon, in which the owner of the store was fatally shot. Those responsible for the robbery and murder were identified and arrested.
Police believe a student inside the vehicle, Jason Nguyen, was dealing marijuana. He was arrested on charges of possession of the stolen firearm, carrying a handgun without a license, dealing in marijuana, possession of marijuana and illegal possession of an alcoholic beverage.
There is no evidence to indicate that Nguyen was involved with the robbery of the gun store. According to him, the recovered weapon was purchased in Indianapolis.
