SHELBY COUNTY, Ind. — Emergency crews were called to the scene of a multi-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a man Monday.

The crash happened just east of the Johnson-Shelby county line on State Road 44 at County Road 625 West around 6:54 a.m.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said five vehicles were involved in the crash.

Investigation at the scene shows that a Dodge van was going westbound on S.R. 44 when it sideswiped a 2001 Pontiac Aztec being driven by Amber Hosier, 45, of Franklin.

The investigation showed that the van continued westbound and collided head-on with a 2011 Chevy truck driven by Barton Brettnacher, 45, of Bargersville.

The van sat idle in the roadway and was then struck by a 2013 Jeep driven by Kyle Gossage, 25, of Shelbyville, causing the van to strike a 2015 Ford truck driven by Thomas Urrutia,62, of Morgantown.

Two medical helicopters were called to the scene to transport the driver of the van and Brettnacher to Methodist Hospital. That’s where deputies say the driver of the van succumbed to his injuries.
