INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. —Indianapolis Metropolitan police arrested a man accused of stealing an SUV on the near north side last week with a child still inside.

Dayna Johnson was arrested in connection with the case, IMPD said. The car was stolen on Friday around 6:20 p.m. at East 30th Street and North Delaware Street. The child’s mother had gone inside to get mail; other children also got out of the vehicle.

The 6-year-old was still in the Ford Explorer because he’d fallen asleep. Police said Johnson stole the vehicle, setting off a search for the boy and the SUV.

About two hours later, at 8:30 p.m., the boy was found safe at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, where he was dropped off along with the vehicle. He wasn’t hurt and was reunited with his family.

Charges against Johnson include kidnapping and auto theft.
