UPDATE: Police identify woman killed after truck tire flies over I-465 median, crashes through windshield
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A woman died Monday after a tire came crashing through her windshield while she was driving on southbound I-465.
The accident happened just after 10:15 a.m. on I-465 near I-74 and Southeastern Avenue. The rear left wheel from a Dodge Ram pickup truck traveling on northbound I-465 became detached and flew over the median.
The tire crashed through the windshield of a Chevy Equinox traveling in the southbound lanes of I-465, critically injuring the driver. The woman was taken to Eskenazi Hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Indiana State Police identified her Tuesday as 43-year-old Crystal Emerick of Angola.
The driver of the Dodge Ram, 27-year-old Chad Hockett of Indianapolis, remained at the scene and fully cooperated with investigators, police said. Investigators were still working to find out what caused the wheel to detach.
The left two lanes were blocked until about 12:15 p.m. as crews worked to clean up the crash.
