INDIANAPOLIS–A 7-year-old child is sent to the hospital in critical condition after being struck by a car on the city’s south side Saturday evening.

Shortly after 9 p.m., emergency crews were called to 71 East Southport Road.  That scene is near South Meridian Street.

The child was trying to cross the street and someone was helping him by stopping west bound traffic.

A car traveling east bound on Southport Road hit the child and also another vehicle that was waiting at the light.

The child was taken by ambulance to Riley Hospital, where a doctor says their injuries are not life threatening.

Police say the driver of the striking car remained at the scene and was cooperating with police. Both drivers were sent to the hospital with minor injuries.

The child’s family says the child turns 8 in two days, and they were having a family get-together when the child was trying to cross the road.

Neighbors across the street who were also having a party heard the accident, and a first responder came out to care for the child while waiting for police to arrive.
