INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Three firefighters suffered minor injuries while battling a large fire at an apartment building on the northeast side of Indianapolis.
IFD was called to the Waterside at Castleton apartment complex in the 8500 block of Whipporwill Dr. around 1:30 a.m. Thursday.
According to IFD, crews encountered heavy fire and smoke when they arrived. There was reported entrapment, but a search of the building didn’t find anyone. No residents were hurt.
Two firefighters suffered slight injuries that IFD described as heat-related. They were taken to an area hospital, according to Shift Commander Kenyon Jones. A third firefighter was treated at the scene for a laceration.
The fire damaged 16 units and displaced 24 people, IFD said. Dispatchers received multiple 911 calls about the fire.
"I got up, grabbed my wallet, keys, phone as fast and I could, woke my roommate up, told him there’s a fire told him we had to go," said Justice Runion, a resident at the apartment.
Residents and their pets escaped without injury. Witnesses reported some residents going door-to-door to alert their neighbors about the fire. Runion said residents who escaped got into their cars and honked their horns in hopes of getting the attention of their neighbors.
IFD also said the apartments had working smoke detectors. Damage from the fire was estimated at $750,000 and the cause remains under investigation.
