MIAMI COUNTY, Ind. – Two men found the body of a homicide victim in Miami County while mushroom hunting.
Law enforcement was called to the Okie Pinokie Trail near the area of State Road 124 and Miami County Road 510 on Saturday around 10:20 a.m. for a possible death.
A preliminary investigation revealed that two men were mushroom hunting in a wooded area when they found a man’s body.
The man was identified as 22-year-old Drake Allan Smith, of Summitville, Indiana. Officers are treating Smith’s death as a homicide.
"Mr. Smith himself is only 22 years of age to have someone that young lose their life alone is just unsettling. We are going to do our best for the Miami County community as police officer to solve this case," explains Sgt. Tony Slocum, with Indiana State Police.
Detectives say Smith's body was in the woods for less than 12 hours. Witnesses reported to investigators that Smith was last seen at a friend's house on Friday night around 11 o'clock.
It's not yet clear if Smith was killed near the trail or if he was killed elsewhere and someone dumped his body in the woods.
