3-year-old Indiana girl who was reported missing found dead in pond

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) — Northwestern Indiana police say a 3-year-old girl who went missing has died after being found unresponsive in a pond.

Valparaiso police were dispatched to a residence Monday night after the girl was reported missing, and officers, police dogs and fire department personnel began a search.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports that a police dog found the missing child unresponsive in a pond about 45 minutes later and crews began medical treatment. The girl was later pronounced dead at a hospital in the city that’s located about 15 miles southeast of Gary.

The child’s death remains under investigation by Valparaiso police and conservation officers with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
