LAWRENCE, Ind. – Lawrence police are investigating a crash involving an officer.

The crash occurred around 2 a.m. in the 4900 block of N. Franklin Rd. Residents in the area tell FOX59 they heard a loud boom. When they went outside, they found a badly damaged Lawrence patrol car.

The officer, 26-year-old Derek Loyal, suffered minor injuries and was alert and talking before being transported to Methodist Hospital.

Police say the other driver, 18-year-old Juan Castro, was not injured, and police believe he was impaired. Castro has been preliminarily charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Investigators believe Officer Loyal was driving northbound on Franklin Rd. when the white Chevy Tahoe driven by Castro crossed the road from E. 49th St. into the path of the officer’s car.

Contributing factors of the crash remain under investigation.
