Pilot escapes fiery helicopter crash in Johnson County field

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. – A pilot is recovering after his helicopter crashed and caught fire in a Johnson County field.

The crash occurred just after 6 p.m. at Franklin Flying Field.

The sheriff says the pilot may have been testing the aircraft when it suddenly went down at the end of one of the runways.

The pilot was able to get out of the cockpit before it caught fire. He was taken to the hospital but was alert at the scene.
