Northbound I-465 on Indy’s west side reopens after crash leads to hours-long closure

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – An overturned semi on NB I-465 near I-74/Crawfordsville Rd spilled diesel fuel, causing a closure and major backups on the west side.

The interstate finally reopened around 12:30 p.m, according to INDOT.

The Wayne Township Fire Department said the truck was carrying about 300 pounds of liquid sodium hydroxide. Some of the material spilled, prompting a response from the department’s hazmat team. To make matters worse, there was also a four-car crash in the resulting backup.

The backup extended from Crawfordsville Road to 10th Street and beyond. During the closure, police recommended using street routes to get around the crash and re-enter I-465 at 38th Street.

Several lanes remained closed for hours as crews worked to move the truck and clean up after the wreck, making it slow going for morning commuters on I-465  northbound.
