LAWRENCE, Ind. -- Police say a teenage girl was murdered in Lawrence on Thursday.
Police were called to the 8800 block of Rue Madeleine, in Maison Gardens near East 42nd Street and Post Road, shortly after 7 a.m.
Officers were first called to the apartment complex after family members found the 16-year-old girl shot and killed and called 911.
"Family members found the 16-year-old female with at least one gunshot wound. Unfortunately, she didn’t survive those injuries," said Lawrence police deputy chief Gary Woodruff.
The victim, identified as Shiloh Britton, was pronounced her dead at the scene. Britton was a student at Lawrence Township Schools. The district released the following statement:
The MSD of Lawrence Township was saddened to learn of the death of a current student on Thursday morning. Our deepest sympathies go out to her family, friends, and teachers. Trained counselors are available at impacted buildings to talk with any student or staff member in need of support. As this is an open investigation, we are in full cooperation with the Lawrence Police Department.
On Friday, police said the coroner ruled the teen's manner of death as a homicide.
As for who may have killed the teen and why, police don’t yet have those answers. At this point investigators are trying to figure out what led up to the death.
"Lawrence police detectives are investigating what the circumstances were. Right now we’re treating this as unknown, as a death investigation," said Woodruff. "It does not appear it was self-inflicted and we’re open to any circumstances that may have led to her death."
So far no arrests have been made. Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS or Lawrence police at 317-545-7575.
