INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-- A man was killed Friday in a shooting on the city's northeast side.
Police say it happened on Pineneedle Court, near East 42nd Street and Mitthoeffer Road, around 10 a.m. Officers thought they were responding to a crash. When they arrived, they found the man who had crashed his car had also been shot.
Witnesses jumped in to help.
Officers say it appears the shooting took place across the street. The victim was taken to the hospital critical condition, but later died.
Indy is on pace for another record-breaking violent year and neighbors say they’ve had enough.
“We need to get together, and we need to start praying more. That’s what’s going to get us together,” said neighbor JoAnne Dickerson.
Police say they're focused on the victim, not the numbers.
“Every person that loses their life, to us, it’s tragic. I know numbers are talked about on occasion, but I can guarantee you the officers and the detectives that are working this crime scene right now, they’re not thinking about what number this is, they’re thinking about this is another person who tragically lost their life in our city,” said IMPD Officer Michael Hewitt.
Investigators say they are still working through the details. IMPD is searching for the shooter in this case. If you have any information, please call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS (8477).
Indianapolis is now at 155 criminal homicides for 2018. Last year, the city hit 157.
