LAWRENCE, Ind.-- Police say a man was found dead behind a dumpster early Wednesday morning.
Lawrence police received a call just before 3 a.m. reporting shots fired at Canterbury House Apartments, near North Franklin Road and East 47th Street.
The area was investigated and a man was found dead behind a dumpster. At this time, no suspect information has been released.
The victim has identified by police as Aaron Grice, 22. Authorities say he didn't live at the complex, but was visiting acquaintances who live there. This murder now brings the total number in Lawrence to seven for 2018.
“Typically we average between two and four homicides a year," said Lawrence Police Deputy Chief Gary Woodruff. He says the increase is a reflection of the high murder rate being seen elsewhere in Marion County.
Last summer, a double homicide occurred at this same apartment complex. On June 27, 19-year-old Adonai Sprinks and 23-year-old Dalon Wilson-Macintosh were killed near a basketball court at the complex. That double homicide remains unsolved.
"We’ve had some issues here in this apartment complex," said Woodruff, "unfortunately, its been a busy year here."
Residents say the violence there is disturbing.
"I'm ready to move from out here," said resident Tamika Whitehead. She has two teenage kids, and always tells them the same thing: "Keep in touch me with and do not be involved with these strange people out here."
