IU, Purdue, Ball State among several central Indiana universities closing due to extreme cold
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Colleges across Indiana are making the decision to close in the face of this week’s dangerously cold weather.
Ball State University in Muncie will close from 7 a.m. Wednesday to 11 a.m. Thursday. Essential personnel should report to campus and anyone with questions should contact their supervisor. Residence halls, dining facilities, recreation services and the L.A. Pittenger Student Center will remain open.
Purdue University in West Lafayette will close, according to a university spokesman. Classes are expected to resume Thursday. University employees should report to campus at their normal time.
Indiana University Bloomington also canceled classes Wednesday. The campus will remain open.
IUPUI in Indianapolis will cancel classes Wednesday. The campus will remain open and employees are advised to “use their best judgment” when deciding if it’s safe to go to work.
The University of Indianapolis will close Wednesday and remain closed until 10 a.m. Thursday. Essential personnel should report to campus and dining services at Schwitzer Student Center will remain open.
Martin University will cancel classes Wednesday due to the weather. The university also postponed its reception for its new president, Sean Huddleston, until Wednesday, Feb. 6.
Butler University will close Wednesday as well. Essential employees should report to work while scheduled basketball and Clowes events will proceed as scheduled.
Franklin College will close at 7 a.m. Wednesday and reopen at noon on Thursday.
Anderson University will close Wednesday and cancel classes.
Taylor University will cancel classes starting at 5 p.m. Tuesday. They’ll remain canceled until 5 p.m. Thursday.
Marian University canceled classes on Wednesday and expects to hold them as normal on Thursday.
Classes and student activities at all Indiana Tech locations will be canceled from 5 p.m. Tuesday through 12 p.m. Thursday. Day and evening classes and activities at Indiana Tech’s main campus in Fort Wayne and in-person classes at all of the university’s regional locations are cancelled. Online classes will continue as scheduled.
Other closures include IU South Bend, the Elkhart Center and IU Northwest, according to IU Emergency Management. Purdue University Fort Wayne and Indiana University Fort Wayne are also closed. Richmond’s IU East will close Wednesday and reopen at 12 p.m. on Thursday. IU Kokomo will close Wednesday; classes will resume at 1 p.m.
