INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Wish For Our Heroes co-hosted a fun event Thursday to help active duty military families and veterans.
At the event, the organization gave out a special surprise for one lucky veteran and his wife.
“We’re pledging $2,500 towards your family so that you can have a family,” Erich Orrich, the Vice President of Wish For Our Heroes said to Jacob and Ashley Lyerla.
Each penny raised at the event was donated to Jacob and Ashley, who have been trying to start a family for over two years.
The Lyerla's have been through three IVF cycles, which is covered through the VA. Unfortunately those three rounds were not successful.
“It’s a roller coaster,” said Ashley. “You want to feel hope that each round it’s going to work, and then you have this other devastation.”
They say the disappointment has been tough, but Thursday’s contribution will help cover the cost of lab fees associated with donor sperm and embryos not covered by the VA.
"#IVF4Vets has been an amazing blessing," said Ashley. "But funding is not permanent and the law needs to be amended to allow donor material. The thing people can do to help, if they want to help, is to contact their senators and representatives to first keep #IVF4Vets and change it to allow donor material, which we need due to the length of time Jacob has been injured."
Right now, #IVF4Vets is in danger of no longer being funded after September 2019. Resolve, the National Infertility Association is pushing to make #IVF4Vets permanent with the passage of the Women Veterans and Families Health Services Act of 2019.
It was introduced to Congress on February 4th.
