Marion K9 dies after ‘fluke’ training accident

MARION, Ind. – The Marion Police Department says a K9 died during a routine training exercise last Thursday.

Police say they were conducting routine criminal apprehension and fence jumping exercises around 10 p.m. on June 27 on a baseball diamond.

The K9, Assuan, was jumping at a high speed and hit his head on the top rail of a fence. This resulted in Assuan suffering a traumatic brain injury.

K9 Unit Veternarian Noel Ratliff was on the scene of the training and rendered medical attention. The K9 was taken to Comfort Veterinary Hospital but never regained consciousness. He was pronounced dead at 10:38 p.m.

The Belgian Malinois had been with the department for five years.
