INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- A death investigation is underway after a bizarre freak accident on Indy’s southwest side. Just before 1 p.m., Saturday, first responders were called to a home in the 5700 block of Minden Dr.
Police say the lawnmower "turned over" and landed on top of the man, which led to his death.
Neighbors say three men from a landscaping company came to cut grass near a wooded area in the subdivision. That’s when a nurse says her neighbor across the street came running in a panic.
“It wasn’t even her yard, she ran through the neighbor’s yard,” said the nurse.
The neighbor was running across the street to get help for the man who was trapped underneath the lawnmower behind her home in a creek. The nurse and her boyfriend were sitting on the porch and knew they had to do something.
“We saw the overturned mower, upside down in the creek. The poor gentleman was blue and purple in the face, in the creek bed. And one of his coworkers was in the creek bed with him cradling his head,” she said.
As a nurse, she knew exactly what to do. With the help of neighbors and landscapers, they were able to pull the man from the creek to lay him in the shade.
“He had a faint pulse. Then I started CPR. Someone called 911. I did maybe about 7 or 8 rounds of CPR before all of the emergency services arrived,” she said.
The coroner pronounced him dead on the scene. Hours later the landscaping company came to get the lawnmower.
The nurse says everyone in the neighborhood who was around made an effort to save him.
“It was just the goodwill of neighbors thinking and acting quickly,” she said.
We have reached out the landscaping company for comment but have yet to hear back. We’re told the family did go to the scene. However, we are still waiting to learn the identity.
