Indiana man just released from prison for child molesting is arrested for allegedly raping an Amish woman
MARSHALL COUNTY, Ind. – An Indiana man who was just released from prison for child molesting is back in police custody. He’s accused of raping an Amish woman who was at home taking care of her toddler.
Michael Middaugh, 49, was released from prison earlier this year. He was convicted of child molesting in March 2006, and he spent the last 13 years behind bars, according to court records. He failed to register as a sex offender in Elkhart County, and a warrant was issued for his arrest in July.
According to court documents obtained by FOX59, an Amish woman was home alone with her 2-year-old child when Middaugh drove his red vehicle into her driveway. Middaugh knocked on the door and asked the woman for directions to Wakarusa, Indiana.
She said she told him directions, but then he asked for her to write it on paper. When she returned to give him the directions, he grabbed her and placed her head against the side of the home while placing a knife at her throat.
He demanded money, so she gave him her son’s and husband’s wallets. He then used zip ties to secure her hands behind her back, and he forced her into the bedroom where he sexually assaulted her.
The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office broadcasted a description of the suspect to nearby agencies, and the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office told them about Middaugh. He was already listed as a “Most Wanted Felon” in Elkhart County for not registering as a sex offender.
The victim identified Middaugh in a photo array, and the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office shared his picture on social media, asking the public for help finding him.
Police apprehended him on August 30, and he’s currently in the Elkhart County Jail.
He faces six felony charges including three counts of rape, burglary, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, and criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon.
