Police investigating fatal dump truck accident on south side off-ramp

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Indiana State Police (ISP) are investigating a crash involving a dump truck that killed one man on the south side of Indianapolis.

ISP said officers were dispatched to the ramp from I-465 eastbound to U.S 31 at 7:53 a.m. Saturday morning.

First responders found a heavily damaged dump truck overturned on the off-ramp upon arrival.

The driver of the dump truck, Ricky O’Neill, 65, of Indianapolis was found trapped in the wreckage and was unresponsive.

The Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) removed the driver and pronounced O’Neill dead at the scene.

Police said Daniel Kahre was driving a 2006 Pontiac and allegedly changed lanes and struck the side of the dump truck which caused it to run off the road through the guardrail and overturned.

Kahre was not injured and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, according to police.

Road crews have cleared the accident area and roads are now open.

ISP said the investigation is ongoing.
