INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) said a salvage yard fire on the city's near west side is under control.

The fire took place at Mid-Town Recycling, located at 501 South Tibbs Avenue.

IFD said firefighters were dispatched at 10:11 a.m. to reports of several vehicles and a large pile of salvaged material on fire.

Officials said a heavy black column of smoke could be seen for miles.

IFD firefighters arrived around 10:15 a.m. with units from Wayne Township, Decatur Township, and Speedway also responding.

According to IFD, an employee at the salvage yard said he was following standard procedure while draining a fuel tank on a vehicle when the fuel ignited.

Firefighters laid a thousand feet of hose, used strategic drone deployment and used foam to bring the blaze under control.

Officials said the fire was under control by 11:27 a.m. and no injuries were reported.
