MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ind. – A 26-year-old woman died following a crash on I-74 near Crawfordsville Monday morning.
The crash closed all eastbound lanes of the interstate for more than four hours. It involved a semi and an SUV.
According to Indiana State Police, a gray 2013 Dodge Journey was heading westbound when it struck a deer, disabling the vehicle in the right lane. The vehicle’s lights were no longer operational after the crash, police believe.
Kenneth M. Dusharm, 55, Carmel, didn’t see the disabled vehicle, police said. His 2019 Kenworth truck hit the Dodge, pushing it through the median and across the eastbound lanes. The crash blocked both eastbound and westbound lanes; both vehicles ended up in a ditch on the eastbound side of the interstate.
Police identified the driver of the Dodge as 26-year-old Christina Mendoza of Hillsboro. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Dusharm was not injured in the crash.
Police said neither alcohol nor drugs appeared to be a factor. They did note that the road was wet and there was light fog at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation.
