INDIANAPOLIS — The term ‘Freshman Five’ has nothing to do with weight, unless we’re talking about the heavy burden of financial problems that could have been avoided.

Forum Credit Union’s Andy Mattingly is back with a timely and important topic: money tips for college-bound students and their parents. Follow the five simple rules below, and for extra credit be sure to call your mom every day when you’re away school.

Parents should have financial conversations with their kids before sending them off to college, Mattingly said, but starting as early as high school isn’t a bad idea either.

In many cases, parents could also benefit from getting up to speed on a few things. Your kids no longer need cash to pay for things like laundry, for example — that’s all done through an app.
